Abstract

There are several techniques for cleft palate repair, with modifications of each. It is important to evaluate the type of cleft palate to choose the appropriate repair type. The Veau classification system is commonly used to describe varying degrees of cleft palate and has implications for chosen tech- nique and outcomes. The main outcome measure for palatoplasty is speech resonance. Other factors to consider are Eustachian tube dysfunction, postoperative fistulas, velopharyngeal insufficiency, and maxillary growth.
